Night Hotel is a work of fiction. But it was inspired in part by a real document, known as the "Red House Report", a four-page U.S. intelligence memo. Dated November 7, 1944, it was compiled by G-8, the Economics Section of SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force). It describes in detail the "plans of German industrialists to engage in underground activity after Germany's defeat" and to organise "the flow of capital to neutral countries". The source was an agent of the French Deuxieme Bureau (military intelligence) who attended the meeting of German industrialists and senior Nazi officials at the Red House hotel in Strasbourg, France on August 10, 1944.
